Municipal Art Society | New York, New York
Featured in the Metropolis magazine article “The Show Goes On” as one of the exhibitions that continues to matter, Imagine New York: An Exhibition of Ideas, represents over 18,000 ideas gathered through the Municipal Art Society’s project for public forum to share ideas and visions in response to the impact of September 11 on Lower Manhattan and the metropolitan region. The design achieves differentiated environments by spatially organizing the project’s seminal questions:
What have we lost? How have you changed? What is your vision for the future?
The partially enclosed area for what we have lost has surfaces filled with responses to that question from the workshops’ participants. It gives the visitor a semi-private area to view the responses. The multilingual responses to how we have changed are located at one end of the room with tables, an online laptop, and writing materials to record further reactions. The room’s remaining perimeter and tables displaying sculptural reactions to the tragic events of September 11 are citizens’ ideas about the future. A series of translucent fin walls display quotes from the press during the same time period. Polycarbonate panels on metal standards maximize exhibit space and simplified the all-volunteer installation.
